Wajir South MP Mohamed Adow is calling on the government to step up efforts and address the impact of floods in the region.

Speaking during a tour of areas ravaged by flash floods in Dadajabula, Burder and Diif, Adow said communities were marooned and urgently require shelter, food and health care provisions.

Adow, who was accompanied by Culture and Heritage PS Ummi Bashir as well as Burder and Diif MCAs Abdirashid Tajir and Fanax Asture, said the national and county governments should work quickly to provide immediate lifesaving assistance.

"The tour afforded me an aerial and ground assessment of the situation our people are facing; it is dire and requires urgent intervention. Ensuring that they get the support they need, remains top priority," said Adow.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, at least 500 households have been displaced and are taking refuge in dedicated centres or boarding with other community members.

Wajir Red Cross Coordinator Abdia Manya said the organisation will continue to partner with wellwishers to airlift food supplies, NFIs and water treatment chemicals to communities that are cut off.

Manya said the Red Cross is also doubling efforts to ensure aid is airlifted to families that have, so far, not been accessed.

Wajir County government is, on its part, continuing to evacuate residents affected by floods to safer grounds.

In a sensitization plea, the county is calling on residents to move to higher grounds. The county is also urging vigilance against waterborne diseases and emphasizing the use of mosquito nets.
