As Kenyans continue to suffer because of prolonged drought, the Catholic Church has urged well-wishers to exercise humanity by donating food to those affected.
Philip Anyolo, the Archbishop of Nairobi said that as the government pursues food security for Kenyans, the current crisis requires concerted efforts.
Speaking after consecrating the St Francis of Assisi Ruiru Catholic Church in Kiambu County, Anyolo (pictured) said that the church has commenced a supply of relief foods to the most drought-affected counties.
He cited Marsabit, Kitui, Garissa, Wajir and Lodwar as the worst-hit areas where the church has started supplying food donations to and urged Kenyans to embrace the spirit of sharing.
His sentiments were echoed by Ruiru MP Simon King'ara who regretted that many Kenyans are now sleeping without food.
King'ara revealed that between 25-30 percent of his constituents were harshly affected by the drought as most of them were sacked during the Covid-19 period and have no alternative sources of income. The MP said his foundation will start distributing relief food through churches to reach the needy even as he urged well-wishers to support humanity.
He also urged the government to increase funds allocated to the Agriculture Ministry through the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) to enhance the storage of food during bumper harvests.
Four consecutive seasons of failed rainfall have occasioned the driest condition of most land in the country forcing Kenyans to struggle with food insecurity.
