Former Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko has threatened to support Mombasa County UDA governor candidate Hassan Omar against Azimio la Umoja's Abdulswamad Nassir.
Sonko, who on July 28, 2022, lost his bid to be gazetted by IEBC to vie for the Mombasa governor seat, said Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo should be fielded as the alternative candidate failure to which he will support Omar.
Wiper party submitted a letter to IEBC nominating Mbogo as its gubernatorial candidate for Mombasa three weeks ago. In a twist, the Kalonzo Musyoka-led party named Sonko as Mbogo's deputy.
Speaking during an exclusive interview with KTN News, Sonko denied that he is mulling joining the DP William Ruto-led party, but warned that it could be an option should he be backed into a corner.
"It's not about Sonko. Clear Ali Mbogo and let him be on the ballot, failure to which we shall support Hassan Omar. Take this to the bank," said Sonko. "I am not in UDA, but maybe they will force us to that decision. Don't punish everybody because of my mistakes."
The former governor added that he wants the Supreme Court to review its judgement that affirmed his impeachment. "By midnight, tonight, we are filing a fresh petition to challenge that decision. We still have a review before the Supreme Court," said Sonko.
IEBC revoked Sonko's candidature for the Mombasa governor's seat following the Supreme Court ruling that upheld his impeachment as Nairobi Governor.
According to Mombasa County Returning Officer Swalhah Ibrahim Yusuf, Sonko was disqualified from contesting after the Supreme Court rendered its judgment on his eligibility.
"The main ground as to why the High Court allowed your registration as a candidate was the presence of the appeal in the Supreme Court," a letter by IEBC stated in part.
