Three Belgian tourists and a Kenya driver were Friday killed in a road accident at Mwanatibu area near Samburu town, Kwale County along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.
Samburu Sub-County OCPD Fredrick Ombaka said the tourists were in a Toyota van that was heading towards Mombasa when a container truck crashed into them.
Ombaka said of the driver of the trailer was trying to avoid hitting animals crossing the road when the container it was carrying fell on the van.
Voi Sub-County Police Commander Benastine Shari confirmed the accident and said three people died on the spot while one escaped with injuries.
“The accident occurred along the highway. Police in Kwale are better placed to give you more details,” Shari told The Standard.

Police suspected the tourists could have come from the Tsavo National Park at the time of the accident.
“We are still investigating the cause of the accident,” said a police officer at the scene.
One person was injured and taken to Voi Moi Referral Hospital for treatment.
The accident happened some minutes past 1.00 pm on Friday, July 15.
