Three people died last night following an road accident at Tumbuni, near Sultan Hamud in Makueni County, along Mombasa-Nairobi highway.
Two other people were seriously injured in the 10pm accident that followed a head-on collision between a Subaru Forester, that was heading to Nairobi, and a lorry.
Makueni County police commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan said the driver of the Subaru Forester was trying to overtake another car before the accident happened.
"The Subaru driver did not time properly before overtaking and ended up colliding with the lorry," said Napeiyan.
Those who died were the passengers in the Subaru whose driver identified as 27-year-old Mutinda Mwanzau, who survived. The lorry's driver identifies as Moses Njenga,35, escaped with minor injuries.

The Subaru caught fire following the impact and was reduced to ashes. The lorry's cabin was extensively damaged.
The bodies were taken to Kilome Nursing Home mortuary. The injured are receiving treatment at the same hospital.
