The Kenya Meteorological department has warned Kenyans of strong winds and large waves expected to hit 15 counties.

Through a statement on Wednesday, July 15, Kenya met said the strong winds are expected to begin from July 16 to July 18.

The met department predicted that there's a 33 to 66 percent chance of the strong winds occurring.

"String southern winds of more than 30 knots (15.4meters per second) are expected over the coast and eastern sector on Thursday, July 16.

"The wind speed is expected to strengthen to more than 40 knots (20.6 m/s) on Friday, July 17, at 3 am. The strong winds are likely to reduce to 30 knots on July 18, 2020," read part of the statement.

The counties likely to be affected include Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale.

Residents in the mentioned counties were advised to be on the lookout for very strong winds and waves in the Indian Ocean.

Kenya met also warned that the strong winds might cause damage such us uprooting roofs and trees and structural damage.

"Very high waves may lower visibility, cause capsizing of boats, and threaten the safety of those engaging in water sports and recreational activities.

 "People are urged to continue listening to local media as updates will be provided if conditions change significantly. Further advisories may be issued as we follow the progress of these weather events," said Kenya met.
