The County government wants to be allowed to fire medics who have defied a court order barring them from striking.

Through lawyer Rono Kibet, the county told the Employment and Labour Relations court yesterday that the medics downed tools without following due procedure.

Mr Kibet said the medics had defied two orders issued in Nairobi on May 24, restraining them from engaging in the strike.

Kibet argued that the medics' union had refused to enter into any form of negotiations with the county.

He requested the court to rule that the strike was unprotected and illegal.

“The court should direct that the county government is at liberty to undertake any disciplinary measures on the medics,” Kibet said.

In response, the medics, through lawyer Wachika Ochima, told the court they had already resumed their duties, and that the demand by the county was needless.

The court will make a ruling on July 4.
