Gusii leaders have initiated another round of development and unity talks ahead of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s visit to the region later this month.
In a closed-door night meeting on Friday evening, the leaders led by Kisii Governor James Ongwae and his Nyamira counterpart John Nyagarama agreed to set aside political differences and work for the interest of the people.
Eighteen of the 21 MPs, senators and governors from the two counties attended the meeting that discussed among other issues, cementing unity of Omogusii and its leadership and issues affecting the community and the region’s development.
This is not the first time leaders have come together in a show of unity. Towards the last elections, several leaders from Kisii and Nyamira held a series of rallies across the region to preach peace and rally the community to speak with one voice.

The move was short-lived with a number of leaders divided along political parties. The region ended up having every political party fighting to have its share in the region.
Political ambitions among the leaders have in the past been a major impediment in the unity talks.
In Kisii, Deputy Governor Joash Maangi, Kitutu Chache South MP Richard Onyonka and his Nyaribari Masaba counterpart Ezekiel Machogu are seeking to succeed Governor Ongwae.
In Nyamira, Deputy Governor Amos Nyaribo and Borabu MP Ben Momanyi have already declared their interest for the county’s top seat.
