Passaris uses Ruiru commuter train to work

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris on Friday morning surprised many when she boarded the Ruiru commuter train to the Nairobi CBD.

In a video published on her Twitter handle, Passaris is seen freely interacting with passengers as she seeks to find out the challenges they often experience during their journey.

She goes ahead to ask how the relevant authorities control the number of passengers who board the train and finds out about their operational challenges.

Kenyans have been a worried lot over the past few weeks due to the increased fuel prices and have sought alternative means to cut on costs.

While others have opted for carpooling, residents of low and middle-income estates have resorted to using commuter trains which are far much cheaper.

The fact that trains are not affected by traffic snarl-ups makes them an attractive option, although they have their own challenges like delays and overcrowding.

The recklessness of matatu drivers in Nairobi was last week highlighted when a number of them were recorded causing a nuisance in the CBD.

This forced the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) to suspend the licenses of drivers who were involved in the act.

A number of those matatus were also impounded as police seek to restore sanity on Kenyan roads.
