A water firm is keen to end water problems in the city, but this will take take a little longer.

Athi Water and Services Board is currently undertaking projects aimed at increasing water supply.

Apart from the Northern Water Collector Tunnel that is expected to supply 140,000 cubic metres per day, the board is also implementing a Nairobi Modification Project.

The Northern Water Collector Tunnel is said to be 25 per cent done and is set for completion in June 2018.

“The scheme, under Phase 1, is to divert water from Maragua, Gikigie and Irati rivers by means of weir control intakes and convey it to Thika Dam Reservoir,” said acting Chief Executive Officer Mwangi Thuita.

The project is funded by World Bank.

The Nairobi Modification Project consists of three investment lots that are funded by the German Development Bank. The first lot is Kiambu to Embakasi water transmission pipeline that started in November 2016 and is expected to be complete by November 2018.

The Kabete-Karen water transmission pipeline to Eastern and Western Nairobi Peri-Urban areas is currently underway.
