- Court of Appeal ruled that elections results announced at constituency level will be final
- High Court’s decides results declared by returning officers
The court ruling that returning officers at the constituency level will announce presidential results while the IEBC will declare the final winner of the poll in a single pronouncement is a step in the right direction and will help ensure transparency and consequently credibility of elections. There have been claims that results are manipulated while being transported to the IEBC tallying centre in Nairobi from the constituencies. Now this is all behind us and we expect a peaceful election. The electoral commission must implement this ruling fully. There must be no doubts about election results to ensure peace. The long-awaited 2017 elections are finally here amid hope and tension. All attention has shifted to the polls and most media content is about the politics of the day. However, whatever happens, let us understand that elections come and go. We will need a country to live in and therefore peace must reign. To the politicians, these elections are a test of our democracy. Let us show we have matured by exercising tolerance to opposing views. Let our 53 years of self-rule count. We must never again go back to where we were in 2007/2008. Onwonga Yabesh, Nairobi. yonwonga@yahoo.com
There have been reports in a section of the media that services in government offices are slow these days. I have no doubt it is because of the campaigns. Many government officials have abandoned their duties to campaign for Jubilee while others are just slow, maybe because there is no strict supervision. Despite all this, other government agencies, KRA, customs, and security officers must remain alert because any form of laxity may mean a lot of harm to Kenyans and the country.
