It is now official - Musalia Mudavadi is the anointed spokesman of the Luhya community.
The coronation was expected to draw sharp criticism from his opponents as senior politicians would prefer a free-for-all situation.
So what made him triumph over other Luhya political giants? First, he has vast experience in politics spanning over three decades. That alone sets him apart.
Second, Musalia has held top positions in government, including Cabinet minister, deputy premier and vice president. By virtue of having held these positions, Mudavadi is the senior-most politician from Western region. Third, Mudavadi’s brand of politics is polished. The man from Mululu practises gentle politics devoid of confrontation.
Fourth, having taken a stab at the presidency, the people of the region feel that he stands a reasonable chance in the presidential race as part of Nasa.
