In the recent past
students unrest in higher institutions of learning has escalated in alarming rates
which sends chills down the spine.

Few weeks ago, Masinde
Muliro University of Science and Technology was closed indefinitely and in a span
of few days, Kibabii University followed
suit. Masai Mara University witnessed some unrest when students were waiting for election results-thank you
for having maintained peace after
elections.

At this moment, Kisii
University Main campus has been closed indefinitely (a very common term in our varsities) after
students went on rampage.

Each of the above
universities has their own reasons for causing mayhem and disrupting tranquility
in the institutions. The issues
range from increase in school fees and failure to release exam results in time.

In most of cases, a
finger is being pointed to the administration for not acting on student's grievances
and turning a deaf ear on their calls for dialogue.

Is the US election really so close?
As a university student,
one should carry themselves with decorum and use formal means of communication
to air grievances if need be. Some
students have gone a notch higher by destroying university property and burning down property of local traders
around the varsities. This should
be condemned with the strongest terms possible.

On the other hand, the
administration should involve student leaders when making some decisions to
avoid misunderstanding which is always a prerequisite to protests. Dialogue should be embraced to solve these
issues amicably.

Strikes have gone to an
extent of loss of lives and scores injured following a ping pong and standoff between police and
students. In addition, police
officers should cease from using live bullets
because stray bullets have caused injuries and
deaths.

Therefore, let us
maintain peace and tranquility in our colleges. Meanwhile, I thank Maseno University for having conducted
free, fair and peaceful elections. The other
universities can borrow a
leaf from you.
