Fear as Moi University workers demonstrate and threaten to sabotage 1st year admission

Moi university workers have been demonstrating since Monday August 29th. The workers are demonstrating over alleged employment insecurity. The workers say the university is planning to use private companies to offer services in the hostels.

This is not the first time the workers are demonstrating. Not long ago, they were on a go slow, and they were not cleaning the hostel. The hostels became filthy as the garbage was thrown anywhere, while the bathrooms and the toilets clogged.

The workers complained of late paying and not enough cleaning resources like brooms, gloves and rakes.  It went as far as the students interfering and the Vice Chancellor provided the said equipment for workers to go back to work.

Now, the workers are threatening to sabotage the first year admission which is scheduled for 5th September 2016, and the coming graduation if their pleas are not listened to.

In a memo from the office of the vice Chancellor, this is what he had to say.

“It has come to my attention that some members of the management are being blamed for the council resolution outsources services to the extent that their lives are being threatened as well as destruction of their personal property.

The management have resolved to bring to the attention of council the concerns being raised arising from the advertisement to outsource the said services. The university is expected to receive students in a week’s time and also preparing for graduation, which is a major event in the university calendar, and therefore failure to render services will be disadvantageous to all of us.

We therefore urge all concerned to remain calm and continue offering their services as we await the council response on the matter.

I therefor urge all staff to be at their work place as we resolve the matter as we have always done so in the past.”
