Amid the continuous political huffing and puffing within the Cord fraternity, something quite unnerving and queasy is going on.

The battle to settle and unify behind a compromise candidate who will give the ruling jubilee party a run for her money come 2017. This is a battle that will define Kenyan politics for a long time to come. So far that battle has taken a winding rough terrain, if recent events are anything to go by.

If you have been keenly following events, you would have thought Cord Principal Moses Wetangula was a measly inconsequential political apparatchik within Cord.

The man from "mulembe" seems to have found a new sprint in his step or is it the audacity of hope?

He has come out severally to point to Cord presidential flagbearer and the great bear of Kenyan politics, Raila Odinga that he should shelve his presidential ambitions in 2017 and instead rally behind him.

Senator Wetangula is also involved in an intense behind the scenes negotiations and political horse trading with his Luhya brethren from the expansive and vote laden western province.

Lately he's been working hand in glove with them to chart the political direction of his community in 2017 while sending out subtle message feelers to the right honorable Raila Odinga.

Talking of messages, the art of communication has many texts and subtexts and communication can sometimes be lost in "translation" or as the former United States president George Bush used to say, maybe Senator Wetangula is sending "subliminal" messages.

The other problem with messaging is the way messages are encoded when being sent sometimes is not the same way it's usually received at the other end. When this happens, we have "dissonance" meaning the message may not have been received the way it was intended.

This could be what is unfolding within the Cord fraternity. Then there is the notion within some in Cord and especially close stalwarts of honorable Raila Odinga that come what may, the doyen of opposition politics is and remains the best bet for Cord.

This is happening while the other co-principal, honorable Kalonzo Musyoka has decided to go mute. Maybe he is working overdrive to activate his political networks.

The silent battle of wits and attempts to outmaneuver each other is going on under a thick cloak of silence but sometimes the muffled voices come out in a spat of murmurs.

Few months ago, Senator Wetangula was saying this time quite boldly, that if it's a question of numbers to decide the Cord flagbearer that he has sufficient numbers.

Numbers that are being peeled and being spirited away you could argue by the likes of Cyrus Jirongo, Mudavadi and the new kid in the block who is intent on creating his own stomping ground, Ababu Towfiq Namwamba.

Musalia Mudavadi is the latest entrant to the combustible heady politics of Cord and is being floated by some quarters as the real deal which adds to the bedlam of confusion and conundrum facing Cord.

All the above is happening while the ruling Jubilee party is busy cannibalizing and devouring younger parties to create a formidable political force that will wither and suck the last remaining vials of blood out of Cord.

Some say cord kingpin Raila Odinga is a master schemer who has some secret up his sleeve and who at the opportune moment would spring a surprise on jubilee.

Everything aside, the dynamics of choosing who should fly the Cord flag would not be easy. Give it to them, Jubilee compared to Cord, have already a head start.

Would Cord be third time unlucky? Among the three principals, some will be prodigious horses and others hopeless dead mules who would need a new lease of life.

We would see how the three principals navigate the tempestuous process of picking the presidential candidate for Cord, until then the short dramas and tiffs can continue playing out.
