The County Government of Kisumu has moved to test fish from China to determine its suitability for human consumption.

This follows fears that the fish, which has flooded the Kisumu markets, may not be fit for consumption.

The county's Department of Health Chief Officer Ojwang' Lusi said he had instructed health officers to collect samples of the fish for laboratory testing.

"The fish imports have come to our notice through the mediaand we cannot take any action as at now. We want to do our work professionally, and once we have the results of the tests, we will advise accordingly," said Dr Lusi.

The officer said it was not clear to his office how the fish found its way to the local markets, adding that importers will be questioned to provide any necessary documentation.

"We do not have any set conditions that importers have to fulfill to have the product in the market but our responsibility as the health department is to ensure the residents are safe. We will not look into political or economic issues coming with it," he said.

Up to Wednesday, a spot check by The Standard indicated fish mongers were still obtaining the product from the importer.
