About Sh12 billion will be spent on refurbishing 20 railway stations in Nairobi in readiness for the city railway system connection to the Standard Gauge Railway at Syokimau Railway Station.

According to Kenya Railways MD Atanas Maina, the efforts are meant to improve commuter experience in the city. The old stations to be refurbished include Ruiru, Kahawa, Mwiki, Donholm, Kikuyu and Athi River.

“We will also invest in new wagons and coaches in the next 24 months. Currently, we are ferrying about 13,000 passengers a day and we would like to grow this to more than 100,000,” Maina said.
