African Union should ask Nkurunziza to quit

The African Union has decided to send troops to Burundi. But that action was not decided until the international community spoke and raised alarm over the escalating violence.

Burundi went to civil war this year when President Pierre Nkurunziza announced his intention to run for a controversial third term in office, which he offered to himself in July.

He is the cause of trouble. There is nothing to investigate. There’s no need to send an East African Standby Force (EASF).

The AU should ask Nkurunziza to quit so that the people of Burundi can decide who they want to lead them. The Africa Union is known to be biased in favour of sitting presidents and their deputies, so by sending troops there, they’ll be sending troops to crush those against Nkurunziza. They will not go there to defend the citizens. Left unchecked, the violence in Burindi could degenerate to genocide. The AU should first bolster dialogue and peace. Neighbouring countries should in no way send their troops there. Those countries may have a vested interest.
