The University of Cape Town has confirmed that student Zanele Moyo, the daughter of Zimbabwean Higher Education Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo, was found dead in her private, off-campus flat on Saturday morning, 17 October 2015. The cause of death has not been confirmed. The SA Police Service was contacted and will investigate the cause of death.
Ms Moyo was in her second-year at UCT, majoring in Political Studies, International Relations and Gender Studies. She was 20 years old.
The university has made contact with the family and has offered assistance with the funeral arrangements as well as counselling for the family, any student or staff member who is distressed by Ms Moyo’s death.
Gerda Kruger, the Executive Director of Communications and Marketing at UCT, said, “The death of any student is a tragedy for the entire university. On behalf of the UCT community I extend heartfelt condolences to Professor and Mrs Moyo and their family, as well as to Zanele’s friends, lecturers and classmates.”
