NAIROBI: One of my friends has had it with her spouse. She never met a more insecure person in all her life. The man’s insecurities have literally denied her the peace that God promised her.
You would think her husband is the owner of her phone because he carries her phone when they are together. She has to explain in detail her relationship with every contact on her phone list.
And she has to answer very many questions about those who call her frequently.
She never hangs out with the girls. Her life is predictable and she is rarely seen anywhere without the hubby tagging along. Yes, including her now rare visits to see her parents in the village.
It is not only in relationships where we encounter insecurities. Even the Kingdom of God has its fair share of insecure people. Being insecure simply translates into a total and serious lack of trust in a person or in God.

The spouse who goes sniffing around his wife’s clothes or digging into her purse looking for incriminating evidence is saying that he does not believe her. His message is that she cannot be trusted alone and needs to be on a leash.
But does the Lord not say that it was for freedom that we were set free? Anyone who has trusted in the Lord is no longer in the bondage of insecurity because He is confident God is by His side.
Think of a baby who is very comfortable being thrown in the air, confident that the father’s arms are ready and strong enough to receive him when he lands. Unfortunately, many of us do not exhibit this kind of confidence in God.
We experience insecurity because of our failure to fully trust in God so we will be found groping in the dark about His promises or doing many works of the flesh in order to find fulfilment in life.
For instance, someone who has prayed for something for many years will believe changing churches might do the trick—that’s insecurity.
Another reason we become insecure is that we are obsessed with the wrong things—wealth, possessions, pastors, family and such.
We do not believe that God is our all sufficiency. The moment our neighbour zooms past in his latest vehicle, we panic that we are being left behind and begin to lose confidence in this God who has promised many things but failed to deliver.
This kind of thinking pushes us to do desperate things like quick deals that further separate us from the Kingdom of God.
To overcome insecurity, endeavour to establish an unbreakable bond with God; the security of an intimate relationship with God.
Being insecure means you have allowed fear into your life, yet God is against fear because fear and faith do not walk together.
Likewise, in a relationship, strive to establish a strong bond of love that promotes peace in the home rather than antagonism.
Remember perfect love casts out all fear. If my friend intends to cheat, she will regardless of how much of a watchman her husband is. It is all about trust.
