Kareke asks EACC to probe Sh45m allegedly misappropriated in Mitheru ward

Maara MP Kareke Mbiuki has asked the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to probe how Sh45m was used in Mitheru ward in Tharaka Nithi County in feeder roads upgrading process.

According to documents seen by the Standard, in the 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16 budgets, the feeder roads in the ward were allocated Sh10m, Sh15m and Sh20m respectively, which Mbiuki and residents doubted how they were used since no feeder road was graded.

Mr Mbiuki who was addressing angry residents who were protesting poor roads in Mitheru complained of massive misuse of public funds by the Member of County Assembly (MCA) and called upon the EACC to investigate how the funds have been utilized.

The residents have held a three-day protests along Mitheru-Kaanwa road demanding upgrading of the feeder roads which have become impassable.

"We cannot keep quiet while our people are suffering yet they pay taxes every day, the MCA must come out clearly and tell us where money meant for roads went." Mr Mbiuki complained.

There has been a row between the area MCA Ntwiga Kinuthia and MP Kareke Mbiuki over the repair of the roads where the latter accuses the former of playing politics and misleading the public.

However Kinuthia, who is alleged to have staged demos against Mbiuki condemned the tendering committee saying he will today investigate and find out who was giver awarded the tender and how the money was used.

"Let people not accuse me for nothing because I was not the one gave tenders to contractors, I will inquire from the office then I will be able to know how the tendering process was done and why the roads were not graded," said Kinuthia.

He added that the allegations were political and should not have been aimed at him terming the allegations as malicious and meant to spoil his votes.
