Recently, three Kalenjin MPs kicked off a campaign tailored to pile pressure on Deputy President William Ruto to ditch President Uhuru Kenyatta and run for presidency in the 2017 General Election.
The MPs, all drawn from United Republican Party (URP), reasoned that the DP stands a high chance of clinching the top seat in this election than in 2022 as there is no guarantee that the Kikuyu community will support “our son” to succeed Kenyatta.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that these MPs have all along been a thorn in the flesh of the Jubilee administration. They will never see anything positive done by the Government because they are “out to further the course of Kenyan opposition”. It is no secret that CORD leaders have been working so hard, plotting how to oust President Kenyatta in 2017.
If Ruto decides to bolt out, does he stand any chance of ousting President Kenyatta? I have no doubt that the majority of Kenyans would agree with me that the answer is a big NO. However, I strongly believe that Ruto is aware of this fact and as he has previously affirmed, he will be the last person to play spoiler for Uhuru.
Ruto is in Jubilee to stay. This is because he knows even in the event that his ICC case is terminated, he still stands a high chance of clinching the presidency if he rallies his troops behind President Kenyatta. It is worth noting, according to 2013 pre-election MoU, the DP agreed to back Uhuru for two five-year terms. On the other hand, President Kenyatta would reciprocate the gesture by rallying all Kenyans behind Ruto to succeed him in 2022. Let us hope the two will keep their word.
