The non-teaching staff in secondary schools could soon be paid a salary of up to Sh41,000 if the proposals by an education task force are adopted.
The 'Report of the Task force on Secondary School Fees 2014' says there is need to rationalise the number of non-teaching staff based on students' enrollment and the number of streams per school. "Essential support staff should be employed on permanent and pensionable terms and follow set norms in engaging other categories," reads the report.
The Kilemi Mwiria-led team proposes that a secretary in public secondary schools takes home a maximum of Sh24,662 per month. Their minimum pay will be Sh12,510.
The report places all secretaries under job group F, G, and H. School bursars are proposed to earn between Sh31,020 and Sh41,590 per month.
These staff will be required to have a qualification of Certified Public Accountant III. Office messengers will fall under job group D and will take home a minimum pay of Sh10,380 and a maximum pay of Sh11,370.
Caterers have been proposed to earn a maximum of Sh21,304. They will fall under job F and G. Their minimum pay will be Sh12,510. Cooks will take home some Sh11,370 and a minimum pay of Sh9,660 per month.
