Meru, Kenya: Administration Police officers in Igembe South, Meru County, have recovered a firearm and four bullets from the house of a respected village elder.

Igembe South Sub County AP commander Abdirahim Gulia said the arms were recovered in a cloth box in the house of the 70-year-old at Irimba village in Kanuni Ward on Wednesday night.

“During a night operation police officers broke the door and found him holding the box ready to escape through the widow” said Gulia.

The AP boss said they arrested him and upon opening the box found a rifle with four rounds of ammunition enclosed in clothes.

He said after the arrest, unknown people in the same village shot at the officers in an attempt to rescue the suspect, but no one was injured.

“We believe there are more illegal guns in the same location,” the AP boss said.

The AP commander said the old man is well-known and respected in the area and most of the time young men visit his home for his counsel.

Kiada location chief Japhet Kaithiria urged the residents to volunteer information that could lead to the arrest of more suspects, assuring them it will be treated confidentially.

The suspect is being held at Maua Police Station awaiting to be taken to court.

The officers appealed to the residents with any information on the incident to forward it to them for appropriate action.
