Migori County receives 146.7 million Uwezo fund

MIGORI, KENYA: Migori County has received Sh146.7 million meant for youths, women and people with disability under the Uwezo fund.

Speaking during the official launch of the fund in the county, Planning Principal Secretary Peter
Mang'iti said the funds will be made available to groups across all the eight constituencies within the county.

"This is a good opportunity for groups to apply so that they can benefit from the fund. They can then use the money as capital to start businesses of their own choice," he said.

He warned groups that it will take them longer before those successful to eventually get the funds because they have to undergo training first.

Mang'iti said the training was important because it will assist the beneficiaries in making use of the funds for the intended purpose.

He said that that the fund is yet to allocate money to run offices for committee members and called for tolerance as the government continues putting up structures in place.

At the same time, Mang'iti said the government was in the process of collecting reviews and recommendations from Kenyans which they will then forward to the parliament to be used to amend the laws on how the funds can be managed in case there were challenges.

Speaking at the same event, Nyatike MP Edick Anyanga called on the youths to take advantage of the fund and use it to start businesses.

"I am appealing to youth groups in the county to come out and apply for the funds. Unlike commercial banks which have very stringent conditions, this fund has been made very easy to access," he said.

Kuria East MP Shadrack Manga called on the committee members who will be in charge of
allocating the funds to avoid discrimination based on politics, ethnic and religious grounds.
