Nairobi, Kenya: The taxman’s board has appointed the Commissioner in charge of Investigation and Enforcement after several weeks of lobbying and interviews.
The news on appointment of John Cheruiyot was made by Kenya Revenue Authority Commissioner-General John Njiraini to the staff on Wednesday.
Cheruiyot has been at the rank of Senior Assistant Commissioner in charge of Southern Region (Mombasa), a position he was moved to last December.
This followed the retirement of Joseph Nduati in November 2013.
Cheruiyot was appointed after beating four other shortlisted candidates who included acting Commissioner George Muya who now remains the deputy in the position, Evans Nyakango (Domestic Policy), Collins Wanderi and Ezekiel Maru.
Another position in the Domestic Taxes Department being held by Alice Owuor will be up for grabs in July when her contract expires.
Officials say new structure will come into effect soon, which will see the position of Senior Deputy Commissioner scrapped in major changes.
Hierarchically, there is the Commissioner General, Senior Deputy Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Senior Assistant Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner.
In the proposed new structure, there will be the Commissioner General, Chief Manager, Manager and Assistant Manager.
KRA is managed by five main departments namely Customs Services, Domestic Taxes, Road Transport, Support Services and Investigations and Enforcement.
