TAITA, KENYA: Taita-Taveta County Government has introduced new guidelines for the contractors  implementing community development projects in the region and warned of heavy punishment on breach.

The County Executive Committee (CEC) member in-charge of Water and Irrigation Joseph Mbogho disclosed on Thursday that under the new regulations contractors who delay the completion of water projects will pay Sh 20,000 liquidation damages per day delayed.

The hefty fines would be used to hire water bowsers to supply water to the affected community. “We are doing this to deal with errant contractors who have been doing disservice to the local community for years,” he said.

Mbogho said the heavy fines are contained in the contractual tender agreement and contractors awarded tenders have to commit themselves to stick to them before they embark on the implementation of community development projects.

“Contracts have to be completed within the agreed specified time and those who flout the contractual agreement will pay the liquidation damages,” he warned.

Mbogho made the remarks in Taveta district when the county administration commissioned the implementation of several water projects amounting to over 20 million in the area. He was accompanied by other CEC members Giftone Mkaya (Health), Ben Mghana (Agriculture) and Ward Representatives Reubin Tiges, Francis Rongaine, Mercy Mwakera, Hope Mwakio, Mary Mngola, Ruth Ilao and Maskuji.
