Eldoret, Kenya: Joseph Otieno was the sole survivor of an accident that left 11 people dead on the Eldoret-Nakuru highway near Eldama Ravine.

However, he is struggling to come to terms with the accident that also claimed his 26-year-old elder sister, Winfred Sigu.

The duo were on a mission to secure a travel visa for Winfred in Nairobi ahead of her Saturday flight abroad for further studies.

Otieno’s survival has been termed as a miracle by family members.

“I appreciate the life that God gave us to spend with my daughter. It is sad that she had to die at an early age,” said their father George Sigu.

Sigu said his daughter was an employee of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in the supplies department and was expected to fly to Belgium on Saturday.

“Her brother who survived the accident was escorting her to the embassy to pick the visa,” he said.

The father of five said he is glad that his son survived the tragedy adding that he was rushed to Nakuru General Hospital and was found to have had a slight injury.

“We should keep our roads safe at all times and give support to traffic officers who always try to ensure that there is sanity on our highways,” he said.
