Nyanza, Kenya: Old schools in Nyanza province have made a comeback in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education best performance list.

The schools which stole the limelight in the 1980s and 90s emerged among the top 100 best schools in the country, with Siaya County taking the lead.

They include St Francis Ranga’la Girls, Kisii High, Kanga High, Agoro Sare, Asumbi Girls, St Charles Lwanga Ichuni Girls, Kisumu Girls, St Mary’s Yala and Ramba Secondary.

Siaya County produced the highest number of schools in the list as it also emerged the second best county in the country.

The area Governor Cornel Rasanga told The Standard that he was happy with the performance, adding that they strive to do better in the next KCSE examination.

“This is just the beginning of things to come. I congratulate the candidates for making our county take the lead,” he said.

Rasanga pointed out that education is a priority in his government and he plans to ensure that schools improve in their overall performance.

He said the good performance was based on fear of God, dedication by teachers, students and parents.

On the issue of Ranga’ala Girls beating boys schools in science subjects, Rasanga said it would be important for other schools in his area to lean the tricks from the head teacher who was moved to Ranga’ala recently.

The school topped in chemistry and was number three in Biology and Physics.

Kisii Governor James Ongwae said he was proud of Kisii and Ichuni schools, adding that there is need for those that performed poorly to improve.

The governor blamed the Ministry of Education for the poor performance by some schools in the area, saying the qualities and standards are not checked before registration.

Kisumu Governor Jacktone Ranguma said when one gets education right many things fall in place as required.

He said his government has given education the first priority in all the sectors, adding that this would create an enabling environment to support schools, teachers and students.

“We are working on increasing the budget allocation on education to facilitate programs in the sector,” he added.

Ranguma pointed out that his government would also strengthen the bursary allocation to support more needy and bright students.
