Senate will investigate the reasons behind the impeachment of Embu Governor Martin Nyaga Wambora. Senate Deputy Speaker Kembi Gitura insisted yesterday that Wambora should remain in office until the reasons behind his removal are investigated and put to a vote in the House.
The County Government Act 2012 gives the Senate the final say on impeachment of a governor. Gitura said in Mombasa that Senate was yet to be informed by the county assembly’s speaker of the result of the vote.
He said according to the law, the speaker had two days to notify Senate of the resolution of the county assembly after which Senate Speaker would form an 11-member committee to investigate the reasons that triggered the impeachment process.
“The committee would have ten days to also bring its finding to the Senate for a vote, but for now he is still the governor until that process is completed,” said Gitura.

According to the Act, if the vote does not sail through, the governor would continue to serve and any other process to remove him can only be started after three months.
