KENYA: The world can be a cruel place. It must be because of the craziness that surrounds everyday life; the cutthroat competition in almost all spheres of life.

Others say it is the changing times that have made most of us ruthless. That one has to do all it takes to survive in this tough world. That one has to cast decorum aside to remain on top of things.

Many people may agree with this, but there are those who are jolted back to reality and refuse to be dragged into the jungle of survival for the fittest. Then there are the kind souls — those who would rather embrace humanity and all its tenets, if only to remain sane in this murky world.

Better terms

They are the nurses who will cringe when they hear of a strike, because they know they will be letting down their calling if they down their tools to press for better remuneration and working conditions. They know they can continue to push for better terms even as they serve humanity.

It is the sibling who will not have peace of mind when he knows his brother is sleeping hungry or cold. He is the one who will not enjoy his life if he knows his brother is in jail, and will do whatever it takes to visit him and banish his loneliness.

It is the mother who will cook for her children even when they have wronged her. She will not hesitate to make the beds, even when her heart is breaking from wrongs committed by her brood. Cruelty is not her portion.

Humanity is about the person who will not dare lift a finger to send that nasty email or text message, no matter how aggrieved they are. This is because they know the trauma and heartache that may follow are simply not worth it. They care too much about the feelings of even those they do not know.

It is demonstrated in that person who will offer bread and milk to a stranger who has not eaten for days. It is about that person who chooses to pay school fees for a needy child and insists that the gesture remain anonymous.

It is that friend who will opt not to visit you in hospital when you have your baby, but will be there to open the door when you get home with your bundle of joy. Then, they will ensure a warm meal awaits, even as they see that everything in the household is running smoothly.

Humanity is the thread that weaves together all the persons of the world, because that is what makes the universe happy.
