Mombasa, Kenya: Leaders in Kilifi County on Friday promised to work and co-operate with the Government in a bid to foster greater development in the area.
The leaders said they were ready to support the governemnt after fixing the historical land and squatter problem that has persisted for 50 years.
The leaders included MPs Gideon Mungaro (Kilifi North), Mustafa Iddi (Kilifi South), Dan Kazungu (Malindi), Harry Kombe (Magarini), William Kamoti (Rabai), Gunga Muinga (Kaloleni), Peter Shehe (Ganze), County Women Representative Aisha Juma, Senator Steward Madzayo and Governor Amason Kingi.
The leaders from the county which voted overwhelmingly for Cord coalition thanked President Kenyatta for fulfilling his promise to address the land problem in the coast region.
They were speaking on Friday at Karisa Maitha Stadium where President Uhuru Kenyatta presided over the launch of issuance of 60,000 title deeds in the region out of which 19,000 would be issued to Kilifi County residents.
Kilifi North MP Gideon Mung’aro and County Women Member of Parliament Aisha Juma said Kilifi elected leaders would support the Jubilee Government.
The two also opposed the referendum saying instead of spending energies on the plebiscite, they should engage on more pressing issues affecting wananchi.
“We do not need a referendum right now, what we need is to focus on problems facing Kenyans such as title deeds. We support devolution and if the referendum must be held, let the funds meant for Kilifi County be released to us to finance issuance of title deeds,” said Mr. Mung’aro.
He proposed that the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), Kilifi County Government and the national Government pool resources to finance a complete title deeds issuance in the county.
“In matters of development, I will be close to your government irrespective of party affiliation. If I will be called names for this, let it be,” Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi said.
