Kiambu, Kenya: The Kiambu County assembly spent more than 30 minutes discussing a gossip article concerning one of its members which had been published in one of the local dailies.
A motion was brought in the House by Kiambu Township Ward Rep James Njenga requesting that the matter be forwarded to an investigation committee, saying the allegations tainted the image of the entire House.
He wanted the matter investigated to establish the alleged members for stern action to be taken on him to protect and safeguard the dignity of the House.
The article stated: “A vocal member of Kiambu County assembly has found it difficult to show his face in public after his ex-girlfriend who was also his employer started demanding that he returns a Sh1.5 million car she bought for him for use during his election campaigns.
The vehicle is registered in her name and not his.
When the motion was opened to the members for discussion, all manner of sentiments that unthinkable and subject to ignominy emanated from the honourable members.
The Speaker of the Assembly Nick Ndichu has cautioned the members against discussing the allegation because they were not in a position to authenticate the article since it had not specifically named anyone.
“Please let us restrict ourselves from debating what the article says because we do not know the truth about it,” he said.
But the excited members could hardly stick to the Speaker’s direction and kept saying the alleged member should be investigated and his name made public.
Charles Arahuka, the Chief Whip encouraged the referred MCA to go back to the woman and get a lorry instead.
“If an MCA gave services and got a Sh1.5 million car, it is only fair to go back to the woman and continue with the services as he could get a lorry,” said Arahuka.
Others said it was unfair for the MCA to reap from a “short-lived” relationship and then elope.
Most members however lamented that the motion degraded the integrity of the House, terming it political and baseless.
Nominated MCA Emily Waitherero said it was unfortunate that the House had fallen victim to “unnecessary” gossip.
She said the MCAs were giving the media juicy but embarrassing stories to cover concerning the County.
“Mr Speaker I think we are giving the media unnecessary attention which they do not deserve while debating such things.
“This is how they will continue getting bad stories to
