Hindu council launches small-holders’ directory

Kisumu County: The first ever business directory aimed at creating a platform for small-scale entrepreneurs’ to network and market their products has been launched.

The document, which will change the economy of several counties in Western Kenya, was launched by the Hindu Council of Kisumu. It caters for businesses owned by the Hindu community in Kisumu, Kakamega, Eldoret, Kitale and Kisii counties.

Data in the 112-page directory comprises businesses categories dealing in agriculture, transport, health, finance, industrial products and electric equipment.

The council’s Kisumu branch chairman, Mr Naresh Patel said the document is part of a new trend aimed at helping the community leverage its strength and grow in business through networking and exchange of ideas.

Kisumu Governor Jackton Ranguma said the Asian community in the area would change the county’s economy under the devolved system of government.

Edged out

“Many people feel Kisumu and Mombasa counties are lucky to have members of the Asian community. We must work as a team to develop our economy. Those who come in and do not want to develop our area must be edged out,” he said.

Ranguma said he is working to create a foundation for the county that will make it a business leader in the East African Community.

“I have been looking for foreign investors. I would not be doing this if the county’s economy was good and that is why I urge you to join hands with me to bring development here,” he said.

Ranguma said he has received requests from several companies interested in setting up factories in the county.
