Kenya: An MP has claimed that two private companies are exporting 1,200 kilogrammes of gold a month when national production is less than 50kg annually.
Fafi MP Barre Shill named Skyhawk International Ltd and Ushindi Exports, and accused them of purporting to export gold to the United Arab Emirates.
While requesting a statement from Finance, Planning and Trade and Natural Resources committees, Mr Shill further claimed that up to US$40 million transits through JKIA without any scrutiny.
He noted there are two gold mines — Karebe Gold Mining Limited in Nyatike and Kilimapesa Gold Limited in Lolgorien — which produce 50kg of gold a year, combined.

The MP is seeking to be told where the two companies have been sourcing the gold since 2005. He also wants them to present the receipts of where the gold was bought and sold.
He is further seeking to know the companies the two firms trade with in the UAE.
“I want to know the amount of duty and tax being paid by the two companies to Kenya Revenue Authority from 2005 to date, including the date of last returns made by both companies as required by law,” he stated.
He also wanted to know the reason the two companies transact in cash instead of transferring funds through banks as is the norm for any export business.
Shill claimed the two companies are not using the official monetary instrument declaration form at JKIA, but are instead using counterfeit forms, which are not in quadruplicate as required by law.
Speaker Justin Muturi ordered the two committees to issue a statement on Thursday, next week.
