There are times when you feel like giving the  police a bouquet, then there times that one would like to throw prickly thorns at them. The officers who battled a grenade-hurling terrorist suspect in Githurai to his death on Sunday deserves recognition.

These are the kind of warriors we badly need at this time when insecurity is threatening to tear our country apart. This is because the battle against terrorism, or other the other forms of insecurity we are grappling with, can never be won by cowards.

In fact sometimes one gets the feeling that police are unable or unwilling to fight crime. The case of Busia and Bungoma where a band of criminals has been terrorising helpless residents for weeks, perhaps illustrates this best.

We refuse to believe that criminals have grown smarter than  our security agencies. NO. Police  are not incapable of protecting civilians. They have only become lax. That’s why the relevant authorities should crack the whip and ensure that police and other security apparatuses do their work the way it should be done.

Meanwhile, we wish the officers who were injured during the siege in Githurai quick recovery.
