Nairobi,Kenya:Differences between the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and Kenya Uninon of Post Primary Teachers (Kuppet) are simmering over the composition of a committee to look into salaries and welfare of members.
The delay in setting up the committee has been attributed to wrangles between the two teachers’ unions.
But Knut yesterday maintained that it was only waiting for the Government to gazette the proposed names to the consultative committee mandated by law to review teachers’ pay to embark on the negotiations.
“To say that there are wrangles yet the committee has not been put in place is wrong and misleading to our members and the public,” charged Knut National Assistant Treasurer Richard Kibagendi.

Speaking in Kisii yesterday, Mr Kibagendi accused the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) of creating problems where there were none, saying the process has largely been smooth running.
“Kuppet is complaining that Knut is scuttling the negotiations. How can one derail what has not even started,” the unionist wondered.
He said so far only a proposal of names to sit in the committee drawn from the Teachers Service Commission, Knut, Kuppet, Public Service Commission, ministries of Education and Finance had been forwarded for gazettement to facilitate the negotiations.
rules of engagement
Last Friday, proposed members to the committee met in Nairobi to set rules of engagement where Knut was represented by four members led by Acting Secretary General Muzo Nzili while Secretary General Akelo Misori represented Kuppet.
During the meeting, Nzili proposed the deliberations be postponed until gazzetment, a proposal that was seconded by Misori.
