Two people have died and at least ten (10) others were injured after suspected terrorists attacked travellers on the Lamu-Witu-Garsen Highway near the border of Lamu and Tana River Counties.

According to a statement by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki on Tuesday, August 1, a number of civilians are still missing following the attack.

One victim sustained life threatening injuries and is currently receiving treatment.

Kindiki says security personnel from Nyangoro Forward Operating Base (FOB) responded promptly to repulse the attackers.

"Security personnel who were conducting clearance patrols along the highway, responded rapidly and an engagement with the approximately 60 terrorists ensued, scattering them into the Boni Forest," the CS noted.

Treatment of the injured as well as a search and rescue mission of civilians is ongoing.

Hindi Ward Member of County Assembly James Njaaga and his family were among those who were attacked in the Tuesday dawn incident.

Njaaga's wife died while receiving treatment in Mombasa.

The Standard reported that the Hindi Ward Member of County Assembly was taking his child for medication in Nairobi when a vehicle they were in was attacked.

The family was transferred to a hospital in Mombasa for more treatment.
