Matatu operators in Nakuru have clashed with police while holding demonstrations in Nakuru town today as they demanded that the County Government allows them back in the CBD.
The county Government moved the matatu termini out of the CBD in March in a move aimed at reducing congestion and prevent the spread of Covid-19.
Police lobbed tear gas at the operators and engaged them in running battles for the better part of today morning while chanting to be allowed to drop and pick passengers at the old termini within the CDB
Governor Lee Kinyanjui had ordered the relocation of the matatus from the CDB at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. This was to allow social distancing and adherence to other measures instituted by the Ministry of Health to curb the spread of the virus.
Four months later, the governor has vowed not to allow the operators back to the CBD saying that the new termini allocated during the pandemic shall remain permanent to minimize congestion in Nakuru town CBD.
