The incident occurred as schools close for the April holiday and amid focus on the mental health of youth and young adults over a spike in suicide cases.

A Form Four student at Chinga Boys High School in Othaya was found dead in apparent suicide.

The student is said to have hanged himself inside the dormitory using bed sheets.

His motivation for taking the action is still unknown.

His body was discovered by fellow students at around 1 am on Tuesday.

The principal, Kiringo M’eringo, was hesitant to divulge information on the death, only saying that the police had taken up the matter.

“It is still very early to tell exactly what transpired. The matter has been handed over to the police and the next of kin have been notified. Once more information is gathered it will be shared with you,” the principal said.

Nyeri South Sub-County Police Commander Boniface Wakhanu confirmed the incident.

“It is quite an unfortunate incident and we are already digging into it. We will wait for the autopsy to be conducted and talk to a few people before we can proceed with anything else,” Wakhanu said.
