The Spelling Bee Championship was first held in Nairobi County in 2016 where a pilot was done before the program could be rolled out to all the counties.
The prize was a fully paid trip to Johannesburg, South Africa for the top 3 Pupils and their teachers to represent Kenya in the 1st African Spelling Bee Championship that was held on the 16th July, 2016 in Johannesburg, South Africa
Team South Africa emerged the winners while Team Kenya tied in position two with Team Ethiopia.
Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Nigeria also participated.
In 2017 the program was rolled out to over 2000 schools in 36 counties in Kenya.
The prize for the top three spellers was Sh500,000, Sh300,000 and Sh100,000 for the champion, 1st runners up and 2nd runners up respectively.
The teachers of the above received cash prizes worth Sh50,000 for the champion, Sh30,000 and Sh10,000 for the 1st and the 2nd runners up respectively. The top 3 Spellers represented Kenya in the 2nd African Spelling Bee Championship held in Johannesburg, South Africa on 16th December, 2017.

Registration: April - May 2019
Teacher Training: 1st June 2019
Spelling Bee Test: 7th June 2019
Sub-County Championships: 15th June 2019
County Championships: 22nd June 2019
Spelling Bee TV Show: July - November 2019
4th African Spelling Bee: November 2019
The competition begins at the school level where all registered participants undertake written tests so as to identify the best 3 spellers who will qualify to ensue representing the school at the Sub-County Championships.
The best 3 spellers at the sub-county championships then meet at the county championships to again identify the best 3 spellers who will represent their respective counties at the National Championship on the spelling bee TV show on KTN Home.
The best 3 spellers in Kenya will advance to represent the Country in the 4th African Spelling Bee Championship which will be held in Uganda this year where over 22 African Counties are expected to participate.
