In the last five years, Kenya has reported building tragedies involving about 87 buildings.

These tragedies have left over 200 people dead and 1,000 injured.

According to data from the National Building Inspectorate, 65 per cent of the collapsed buildings were residential, 25 per cent were commercial and 10 per cent were of mixed-use developments.

Some 4,000 houses were found to be unsafe for human habitation in the country and recommended to be demolished.

MAY 1996: SUNBEAM SUPERMARKET, MOI AVENUE, NAIROBI

JUNE 2011: NAIROBI

  • Number of people killed: 2
  • Number of people injured: Several
  • 6-storey building under construction collapsed.

SEPTEMBER 2011: VIHIGA

  • Number of people killed: 4
  • Number of people injured: Several
  • Heavy rains brought down building in Vihiga

JUNE 2012: MLOLONGO

DECEMBER 17, 2014: KALOLENI

  • Number of people killed: 8
  • Number of people injured: Several
  • 5-storey building collapsed. Building was partly occupied, partly under construction.

JANUARY 4, 2015: HURUMA

  • Number of people killed: 5
  • Number of people injured: 32
  • 7-storey residential building collapsed.

APRIL 2, 2015: ROYSAMBU

  • Number of people killed: 7
  • Number of people injured: Several
  • Building behind Thika Road Mall in Roysambu collapsed.

MAY 11, 2015: SOUTH B MOSQUE WALL

MARCH 9, 2016: ZIMMERMAN

  • Number of people killed: 0

APRIL 29, 2016: WALL ON NAIROBI'S LENANA ROAD

  • Number of people killed: 4
  • Number of people injured: 3
  • Wall collapsed on Nairobi's Lenana Road following heavy downpour.

APRIL 29, 2016: HURUMA ESTATE

A house that collapsed in Huruma killing 51.
  • Number of people killed: 51
  • Number of people missing: 10
  • Number of people injured: 140
  • 6-storey building located in Ngei, Mathare, Nairobi, collapsed following heavy rainfall.

JUNE 3, 2016: HURUMA ESTATE

  • No casualties.
  • The collapsed 7-storey building was marked for demolition, occupants vacated.

NOVEMBER 10, 2016: KISII BUILDING AT DARAJA MOJA

Kisii building that left 8 dead.

  • 10-storey building located at Daraja Moja-Nyambera Road near Ram Hospital
  • Owner Jeremiah Matoke and engineer Jeff Ocharo charged with 8 counts of manslaughter.

JUNE 14, 2017: KWARE, EMBAKASI NAIROBI

  • Number of people killed: 2
  • A 7-storey building collapsed, residents previously issued with notice to vacate

AUGUST 31, 2021: GACHIE KIAMBU COUNTY

  • Number of people killed: 5
  • Five storey building under construction collapsed

OCTOBER, 2021: RUIRU, KIAMBU COUNTY

  • Number of those killed: 0
  • 9-storey building collapsed in Ruiru near Tatu City,
  • Building was under construction. No construction worker was on site

MAY 18, 2022: RUIRU KIAMBU COUNTY

  • Number of people killed: 2
