Nakuru Menengai Oilers rugby 7s player was allegedly killed by a suspected gang member on Sunday.
Nakuru County Police Commander Peter Mwanzo confirmed the incident that happened at Kwa Rhonda slums at around 2 am,
Mwanzo said the player was in the company of his teammate and two ladies.
He said that two men aboard a motorcycle attacked the four.
"Commotion began and the deceased was stabbed in the stomach. His colleague was also injured but the two ladies escaped unharmed," said Mwanzo.
Mwanzo said the two were rescued by police who were patrolling the area and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
He added that the player succumbed to the injuries in hospital. His teammate was stable and undergoing treatment.
"The matter is currently under investigation and we will give more updates as we investigate," said Mwanzo.
In a statement released to the press, Menengai Oilers Rugby Club confirmed that the player died of multiple stab wounds.
"He was in the company of another player who is now receiving medical attention at the hospital," read the statement.
According to the rugby team, the player was on the way to his home after watching a football match in the slum area.
"A bodaboda gang dramatically accosted and stabbed them several times," read the statement.
The club reported that the other injured player is in a stable in stable condition.
The player was said to be in contact with the police to provide information that would help establish the motive of the attack and lead to the arrest of the unknown persons involved.
"The incident has left both the Club management and other players baffled as the motive of the attack by a suspected thug running on a motorcycle is yet to be known," reads the statement.
The club stated that it will also release more information.
The player was part of the squad that finished third in the Kabeberi 7s tournament that was held in May this year.
Friends, acquaintances, and strangers took to social media to post emotional messages of condolence after the team posted the statement on social media.
Nakuru residents also called for the investigative team to investigate quickly what happened to the player and fight for justice for his family.
