In most graduation ceremonies, it is the graduates who steal the show with their auspicious looks, family moments and selfie clicks here and there.

But for Moi University’s 41st graduation ceremony, the chairman of the council Dr Humphrey Njuguna, a former Gatanga Member of Parliament (MP), spoke directly on the challenges the institution has been facing since he took over in November 2021.

He notified the students that the university had started a Sh1 billion facelift plan.

“This university’s gate is an embarrassment and since we are grooming academic giants, the environment must be right,” he said.

Adding: “Through this facelift program, we shall have better pavements and ensure the students don’t leave the university depressed Moi University Vice Chancellor Prof Isaac Kosgey said that the institution had initiated plans to build a “students village” that will have a heated swimming pool.

With the current cash crunch universities have been facing, Moi University’s case started when the Ministry of Education directed the scrapping off of self-sponsored programs in universities.

The university lost nearly 4 billion shillings and with the COVID-19 pandemic, the pinch has been felt even more. It remains to be seen how the ambitious Sh1 billion plan will unfold in these ciircumstances.
