A boy’s dormitory has been razed at Lake Baringo Secondary School, bringing to six the number of schools that have experienced fire incidences in Baringo County.

Lake Baringo Secondary is among schools that were submerged by the swelling Lake Baringo last year.

In the past three weeks fire incidences have been reported at Kituro, Barwesa, Timboroa, Kipcherere, Muchongoi and Lake Baringo secondary schools within Baringo County.

Police said that they have launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire that razed the makeshift boys dormitory at Lake Baringo Secondary on Wednesday night.

Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) and other well-wishers donated tents to accommodate some 77 boys after their school was submerged by the swelling Lake Baringo last year.

According to Baringo North sub-county Police Commander Fredrick Odinga, they were yet to establish the cause of the fire that broke out at around 7pm.

“No one was injured during the fire incident but the boys lost all their belongings including mattresses, uniforms, books and other personal items,” he said adding that no arrest was made.

However, there were conflicting reports about the fire with some claiming that it was started by students while a teacher at the school who spoke to the Standard Digital said they suspected an electrical fault.

Another 100 students at Muchongoi Secondary School spent Wednesday night in the cold after a fire razed their dormitory.

The cause of the fire was not immediately established but there were claims that students might have started it.

Earlier on Tuesday night, another fire was reported at Kabarnet High School where a dormitory was reduced to rubbles in a 9pm fire incident.

The incident followed another at Kituro High School a week ago.

Education officials in the county are yet to make comment on the incidents.
