Three people were on Sunday injured in a clash between police and busaa drinkers at a den in Njiru area, Nairobi.
A team of police officers had visited a popular den and arrested the owner and four others for operating the illegal business.
But as the team was leaving the den, locals blocked them saying there was no criminality in brewing busaa and started to stone the vehicle carrying the officers and the arrested.
This forced the officers to open fire in efforts to disperse the group. It was during the confusion that the three were shot and injured.
Police managed to drive through with the damaged car. Authorities are investigating the incident.
The injured were taken to Mama Lucy Hospital where they were admitted.
Police raids on such premises in informal settlement places have been on the rise amid claims of extortion. But the officers argue the joints are dens used by suspected criminals.
Two months ago, a police raid on such a den in Kahawa West, Kiambu ended tragically when a two-year-old boy was shot and killed. The officers who were involved in the operation were later arrested.
And, a suspected thug was Sunday night shot dead in a botched robbery at a building in Matopeni area, Kayole, Nairobi.
The suspect is said to have been in the company of three others and had entered a building where they were robbing.
Police were alerted and rushed there where they caught them leaving and shot one of them while the rest escaped on foot. A 42 inch TV set was recovered from the suspects.
