Three terror suspects have been shot dead at Majengo Mapya in Likoni, Mombasa County, after a shootout with officers from the Anti-Terrorist Police Unit.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations posted on Twitter that seven suspects were arrested and more than 1,600 bullets recovered.

A grenade, G3 rifle and other weapons were also found.

According to the DCI, the suspects are being interrogated.

Among the assortments recovered were 68 air rifle pellets, five kilograms of Ammonium Nitrate [bomb-making material], nine balaclavas, military and police uniform, military holsters, porches rifle oil, six machetes and knives.

The operation comes three weeks before Mashujaa Day that is set to be marked in Mombasa.

It also falls hours after the government told Mombasa residents they are safe, amid talk of an impending terror attack by Al Shabaab.
