A man was on Tuesday charged in a Kakamega court with the rape of his 90-year-old grandmother.

Protus Amusibwe was accused of committing the act on the night of June 8, 2019, at Ilenyi village in Kakamega East.

He was also charged with an alternative count of committing an indecent act with an adult.

The accused is said to have entered the old woman's house, where she lived alone, by drilling a hole through the mud walls at night, undressed her before raping her.

The witness statement shows that during the act it was raining and the granny's screams could not be heard as the accused had covered her mouth.

The accused is said to have committed the indecent act for the whole night before he left and vanished in the morning.

Other family members raised an alarm before taking the victim to Shamakubu Health centre where she was treated and a doctor’s report showed she was sexually assaulted.

The family later on June 11, reported the case and acquired a P3 form together with a post-rape care form at Shisasari police station.

Police launched a manhunt for the suspect who was on the run before he was saved three days later from a mob who almost lynched him.

Appearing before Kakamega Senior Resident Magistrate Erick Malesi, Amusibwe denied that he had raped his grandmother.

The case is set for mentioning on July 5 and hearing to start on August 8 later this year.
