The County has awarded a Sh150 million tender to company for drainage system upgrade in Nakuru town.

This follows heavy rains that have been pounding the town, leaving its major roads, including Kenyatta Avenue and Geofrey Kamau Way, flooded.

In the past week, nearly 100 homes in Kiamunyi and Kaptembwo areas of the town have suffered destruction by floods originating from the higher grounds.

Nakuru County Executive Frank Mwangi said the tender advertised in February was being funded under the Kenya Urban Support Programme.

“The contractor is expected to begin the work in two weeks. The areas to be covered include the central business district, Kwa Murogi, Kipkelion and Kinuthia Mbugua road,” said Mwangi.

Flooding in the CBD has been blamed on the solid waste that is washed away to town from Gioto dumpsite and the posh estates on higher grounds clogging most of the drains.

This has reduced the county to spending much on unclogging the drainage systems across the town almost every two months
