The row between Murang’a University of Technology (MUT) and a local primary school has resurfaced, with the latter claiming there is a plot to fence off its land.
The management of Technology Primary School has protested a decision by the university administration to fence off the disputed parcel of land.
The row resurfaced after Vice Chancellor Dickson Nyariki, in a letter dated March 18, notified the primary school head teacher Beatrice Wachira that construction of a perimeter wall would proceed on the disputed land.
The letter read in part: “The varsity is implementing fencing project in order to enhance security of the university community, in line with the Government directive to secure learning institutions. We have an obligation to fence a section occupied by the primary school for the common good of the two institutions.”
Slow pace
Prof Nyariki said the fencing project has been going on at a slow pace as matters surrounding encroachment of its land by individuals was being sorted.
He said an official from National Land Commission (NLC) was being awaited to identify the correct position of beacons.
Ms Wachira, however, criticised the varsity, saying NLC had ruled that the school should be allowed to acquire its title deed at the Murang'a Lands Registry.
“The varsity acquired its documents in 2002 but the management remained silent, until three years ago when the primary school embarked on the same process to comply with the law,” said Ms Wachira.
She added that the matter came into the open after the county government directed the primary school to get a no-objection note from the university during the process to acquire its title deed.
